Dr. Robin Anne Reid: Tolkien, Atheist/Agnostic/Animist Fan Experiences, and Beyond

In this first official (kind of) Tolkien Pop! podcast interview, Nick shares an interview he did with Dr. Robin Anne Reid that was originally recorded for the Interchanging Melodies Online Summit held in 2023 that was hosted by Tripp Fuller from Homebrewed Christianity podcast and the Process This Substack.

In the interview, Robin shares about their Tolkien experience as a scholar and fan and the project that she was and is working on, i.e., Atheist, Agnostic, and Animist experiences in Tolkien fandom and scholarship. There's also a lot more fun that is had, including talks on fan fiction and sexy Frodo?

Dr. Robin Anne Reid retired from Texas A&M University-Commerce in May 2020 and moved to Bellingham, Washington in October 2020. She is enjoying retirement which is allowing her to finish the scholarly and writing projects she never had time for before. Her current major projects include a recent anthology Queer Approaches to Tolkien, co-edited with Christopher Vaccaro and Stephen Yandell, as well as an anthology on racisms on Tolkien (under contract with McFarland). When those are submitted, she will begin work on her monograph about atheist, agnostic, and animist readers of Tolkien's legendarium. She runs the Tolkien Studies Area for the national Popular Culture Conference. After leaving Facebook in 2022, she set up a Substack newsletter, Writing from Ithilien, which she is using to post about Tolkien scholarship:
